September/October 2011
- Weekly Construction Update
- Awarded to Selland Construction of Wenatchee with a construction bid of $6,704,332.
- Construction complete. The WSP moved into the new building on August 31st and it should be operational on September 1st. Demolition of the old site is on the schedule.
Why is WSDOT
replacing the Port of Entry?
The current Port of Entry scale site was constructed in the mid 1970's and is out of date with today's technology. The new scale site will be equipped with Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) system. This allows the trucks to be weighed on I-90 at highway speeds without stopping at the scales unless directed to. Another feature that will be added is the NORPASS system. This allows the WSP to monitor information electronically through a database about the truck with out stopping the truck. With the additions of the WIM system, the NORPASS system, an inspection building, and additional parking for out of service vehicles, the Port of Entry needs to be moved so that all of these components are located in the State of Washington.
The End Result
The relocation of the scale site will result in fewer trucks needing to stop at the scales. It will also result in improving traffic flow along Interstate 90 and in the Idaho Road Interchange since the trucks will have their own dedicated exit to the new weigh station if they are required to stop.
Project Benefits
The WSP will benefit from having a modern system in which vehicles can be monitored electronically. WSDOT and the traveling public will benefit from this by improved traffic flow in the area.
What is the project timeline?
The project is scheduled to be advertised for construction bids during Spring 2010. Construction will start in 2010 and will last approximately two years with the demolition of the existing site the final work to be completed.
