I-90 - Snoqualmie Pass East - Helping Transportation & Wildlife

“I just love them chocolate covered grasshoppers, don’t you?” I-90 Environmental Intern Kevin Fleming greeted students in an Australian accent during his lecture at the Yakima Greenway Rivers Festival in mid-October. Fleming taught over 500 fourth and fifth grade students the importance of wildlife crossings. He explained that adding wildlife crossings to the I-90 Snoqualmie Pass East Project will provide safer travel for both humans and animals.

The Yakima Greenway hosts this festival every year to celebrate E.A.G.L.E. (Environmental Awareness Greenway Led Education) Earth Day at Sarg Hubbard Park. The festival is an opportunity for representatives from various agencies and organizations to give students in the Yakima Valley an education on environmental issues.

This was the first year WSDOT attended the festival. Our theme was “Helping Transportation and Wildlife.” Our booth featured wildlife crossings, turbidity/water quality, and land restoration/revegetation (pdf 80 kb). A special thanks to all those who helped to make the WSDOT exhibit a success.
