I-90 - Snoqualmie Pass East - Keechelus Dam Vicinity to Cabin Creek Interchange (Phase 2)

Phase 2 and 3 are part of a 15-mile corridor improvement project to improve safey and reliability and reduce congestion on I-90 from Hyak to Easton.

Status

August 2014

Why is WSDOT improving safety and reliability on I-90?

Phase 2 is part of a 15-mile corridor improvement project to improve safety and reliability and reduce congestion along I-90 from Hyak to the Easton vicinity.

On an average day, 28,000 vehicles travel over Snoqualmie Pass and traffic numbers double on weekends and holidays. Traffic volumes are expected to increase 2.1 percent every year, reaching an average of over 41,000 vehicles per day by 2030.

WSDOT is designing Phase 2A, which includes the next 2 miles from Keechelus Dam to the Stampede Pass interchange and the first wildlife over crossing in the corridor near Price / Noble Creek.

WSDOT is scoping and planning for Phase 2B, which includes the next 2.5 miles from the Stampede Pass to Cabin Creek interchanges.

The End Result

WSDOT will continue to increase capacity and improve safety by:

  • Adding a new lane in each direction
  • Replacing concrete pavement
  • Stabilizing rock slopes
  • Building wildlife crossings
  • Straigtening the roadway
  • Adding new chain-up area

Project Benefits

  • Safety. WSDOT will improve the driving surface on I-90 by replacing the concrete pavement, straightening the roadway, and adding new chain-up areas.
  • Congestion Relief. WSDOT will increase capacity by 50 percent in each direction to accommodate projected traffic volumes for the next 20 years by adding a lane in each direction.
  • Environment. WSDOT will minimize impacts to the environment and improve movement of wildlife.

What is the project timeline?

  • Spring 2015 - construction begins
  • Fall 2020 - construction completed

Financial Information

WSDOT is using $108 million of project savings from Phase 1 to design, purchase right of way, and construct Phase 2A and start early design of Phase 2B.

I-90 - Snoqualmie Pass East - Cabin Creek Interchange to Easton Vicinity (Phase 3)

Currently, this phase only has funding for scoping and planning. This phase will improve the next six miles of the corridor from the Cabin Creek interchange to Easton vicinity.

This phase will increase capacity and improve safety by:

  • Adding a new lane in each direction
  • Replacing concrete pavement
  • Stabilizing rock slopes
  • Building wildlife crossings
  • Extending truck-climbing lanes
  • Replacing low-clearance bridges
