I-90 - Geiger Rd to Spokane Viaduct - PCCP Rehabilitation

Status

April/May 2012

  • Weekly construction update
  • Awarded to Acme Concrete Paving of Spokane with a construction bid of $7,849,447.
  • Work resumes on April 23, 2012.  During evening and overnight hours, eastbound and/or westbound traffic between the US 2 Interchange and downtown Spokane may be reduced to one lane in each direction during pavement grinding and/or panel replacement operations.  Panel replacement work between Geiger Blvd. and the US 2 Interchange may require daytime single lane traffic during concrete curing periods.
  • Drivers need to be alert for the 50 mph speed limit that will be in force when work is underway.

This project will replace deteriorated concrete pavement panels, grind concrete pavement to eliminate ruts, bridge deck repairs on the Abbot Rd. and Latah Creek Bridges, and upgrades to illumination systems, guardrail, and signing. The project limits are shown on the drawing above.

Why is WSDOT rehabilitating this pavement?
This section of Interstate 90, west of downtown Spokane, has experienced surface rutting from vehicles using studded winter snow tires.  The worst rutting is evident on the Latah Creek Bridge.  In addition, a number of the concrete pavement panels have cracked and need to be replaced.

The End Result
Tire track ruts will be eliminated and the driving surface will be smooth, provided a better ride and safer roadway.

Project Benefits
The life of the existing concrete pavement on the Sunset Hill portion will be extended, preserving the investment in the roadway

What is the project timeline?
Work will begin during the spring of 2011 and be underway into October.  After a winter suspension, concrete pavement grinding will resume in the spring of 2012 until completed.
