Detouring "super-load" via eastbound bridge

Overview
The westbound steel truss bridge on I-90 crossing the Cle Elum River had restricted vertical clearance for oversized "super loads" traveling west on the interstate. Westbound oversized "super loads" had to detour on the eastbound lanes through the taller eastbound Cle Elum River Bridge, which required total closure of the eastbound lanes for up to one and one half hours. The minimum vertical distance was increased to 18 feet allowing the oversized "super loads" to continue westbound without any delays.

How You Benefit
Car GlyphRelieves Congestion
Westbound oversized "super loads" no longer need to detour using the eastbound bridge. Traffic stoppages to accomodate the detour are eliminated.

Partnerships & Cooperation
WSDOT worked with area tribal officials to identify and minimize adverse impacts to areas of cultural, archeological or anthropological significance. When applicable, we addressed the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.

There were no ground-disturbing activities outside the existing roadway prism as part of this project; therefore, this project was exempt from review under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Funding
This project is funded through the following sources:
