- This project to install a fiber optic cable system along 16 miles of I-5 between SR 510 in Lacey and SR 512 in Lakewood was complete in March, 2014.
Why is WSDOT
installing fiber optic cable along I-5?
WSDOT is expanding its electronic infrastructure that supports "smart highway" devices such as variable-message signs, ramp meters and closed-circuit TV cameras. All these devices help WSDOT manage traffic flow and communicate real-time traffic conditions to the public and media.
The End Result
This project is preparatory to larger projects coming in the near future in which crews will install the actual communication devices.
The benefits to this project will be seen when future projects install the actual "smart highway" devices. Until then, the benefit is that stages of work are getting completed as resources allow, moving closer to the end goal of improving traffic management and communication with the public.
