I-5 - North Everett to SR 528 - ITS and Paving

Status

February 2012

This project will repave a four-mile stretch of southbound I-5 between the Snohomish River bridge and Ebey Slough bridge in Everett, upgrade striping and guardrail, and improve drainage on the Ebey Slough bridge. Additionally, we will install Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) improvements along 5 miles of I-5. We will install six new traffic cameras and update signs and overhead sign illumination along I-5 and part of SR 529.

Why is WSDOT repaving southbound I-5 between the Snohomish River bridge and Ebey Slough bridge and adding ITS improvements?
The pavement in this section of I-5 is showing signs of deterioration and rutting, and needs to be resurfaced so it can last well into the future. This section of I-5 is also the "missing link" in our system of traffic flow maps and cameras. By installing ITS improvements, we will be able to provide real-time traffic information from Everett north through Arlington.

The End Result
This project will extend the useful life of the pavement and improve safety for the approximately 157,000 drivers who use this stretch of I-5 daily. This project will also upgrade guardrail to meet current standards, and improve drainage on the Ebey Slough bridge. ITS improvements will provide drivers with real-time traffic information, and help manage congestion and collisions.

Project Benefits

  • Improved drainage on the Ebey Slough bridge will reduce standing water in the lanes and improve safety for drivers.
  • This project will extend the useful life of the pavement by approximately 20 years.
  • New reflective lane markings will improve visibility for drivers, especially during adverse weather.
  • Existing guardrail will be updated to meet current standards.
  • New cameras and traffic data loops will provide real-time traffic and incident information to the Seattle Traffic map.
ITS investments will help WSDOT manage congestion and collisions to keep traffic flowing smoothly.
