May 2012
- The project is currenlty on hold. Work will resume in July.
- The plan, as it stands now, is to install guardrail July 9 through July 27, pave July 23 through Aug. 3, and stripe lane lines Aug. 13 through Aug. 31.
- We repaired and repaved nearly 24 lane miles of northbound I-5 last year between Burlington and Lake Samish, smoothing and preserving the highway for drivers.
Why is WSDOT
repaving northbound I-5 between Burlington and Bellingham?
Large cracks are appearing along 12 miles of northbound I-5 between Burlington and Bellingham (specifically, between mileposts 232 and 244). There are old concrete panels beneath the asphalt that are causing the pavement to crack and separate. The concrete panels date back to when the interstate was first built in the 1960's. They were paved over in the early 90’s, and we haven’t repaved since.
In an effort to temporarily hold the roadway together until permanent repairs can be made in 2011, our maintenance crews have sealed the large cracks the last two summers. This has helped temporarily hold the roadway together the last two winters.
The End Result
To permanently repair the interstate and smooth the roadway for drivers, we will grind out all of the existing asphalt, crack and immobilize the concrete panels, and then repave.
We will repave northbound I-5 from Joe Leary Slough in Skagit County (milepost 231.8) to Nulle Road in Whatcom County (milepost 243.9).
We will also pave all on- and off-ramps in both the north- and southbound directions of I-5 within the project limits.
Project Benefits
Repairing and repaving preserves the interstate and will smooth the roadway, improve safety for drivers, and reduce long term maintenance repairs and costs.
