- Work began May 27, 2014. Work is weather-dependent and may take two summers to complete.
- Most of the work will be done at night to avoid significant delays for drivers.
- Crews will close a lane in each direction during the night work.
- Lanes will be slightly narrowed over the bridges and the speed limit will be reduced from 70 to 60 for the duration of the project, 24 hours a day.
Why is WSDOT
painting the bridges?
Like a home, car or any other object subjected to year-around weather, steel bridges face the harsh elements like sun, water and chemicals, which age and break down the paint and its ability to protect the steel. They have to be repainted to protect them from the elements.
Removing the old paint, surface rust and then reapplying specialty bridge primer and paint will protect the steel on the structures for roughly 20 years.
These two I-5 bridges carry roughly 41,000 vehicles per day through the Ferndale area. The northbound bridge was built in 1955, and the southbound bridge was built in 1971.
The End Result
Contractor crews will wrap the bridge steel in plastic to collect any falling material, strip off the old paint and apply a new coating of primer and paint. It takes warm and dry weather for this type of work, so crews will work during the best months of summer.
Once complete, the steel structure above and below the roadway on both bridges will be protected from damage by the elements. Painting bridges is an important part of maintaining our valuable infrastructure.

- Economic: These bridges are an important part of the I-5 corridor. Maintaining the bridges is more cost efficient than replacing them at this time. Maintained properly, they will continue keeping up with the demand of commuter and freight traffic for years to come.
