WSDOT, Lacey work in tandem to bridge bike-lane gap

WSDOT awarded the $1.16 million construction contract for this project to Tri-State Construction, Inc. on June 15, 2009.

Construction started in July 2009 and will be complete in early 2010. Nightly lane closures are scheduled throughout the month.  The contractor is currently installing the drainage system, traffic signal cabinets and lighting. Curb, gutter and sidewalks will be installed later this month.

Why is WSDOT building bike lanes and extending left-turn lanes at Martin Way in Lacey?
WSDOT is building new bike lanes to connect existing ones on either side of the I-5 Martin Way interchange. The new lanes will provide a continuous bike route along Martin Way, from Pacific Avenue to Carpenter Road.

WSDOT is extending left-turn lanes to provide additional capacity for vehicles waiting to enter I-5 and improve traffic operations exiting and entering the freeway.

The End Result
A wider roadway accomodates bike lanes and extended left-turn lanes at the I-5 Martin Way interchange.

Crews will relocate existing sidewalks behind the bridge columns of the I-5 Martin Way overpass. The new sidewalks and ramps will meet current ADA requirements.

A new stormwater treatment pond will reduce pollutants from roadway water run-off.

Project Benefits

  • Safety New bike lanes improve bicyclist safety along the Martin Way corridor.
  • Traffic Additional left-turn lane capacity improves traffic flow on Martin Way.
