September 2009
- WSDOT is planning to advertise the project in October 2009.
- Construction of the safety improvements will begin early in 2010. Paving is scheduled for summer 2010.
Interstate 5 is the major north-south highway on the west coast for freight and commuter travel. This project will overlay the roadway and reduce the severity of collisions on I-5.
Why is WSDOT
constructing this project?
Interstate 5 is the north-south highway that connects California, Oregon, Washington, and connects the United States with Mexico and Canada. This section of I-5 provides an intercity connection between Vancouver and the Longview/Kelso areas.
The pavement surface on I-5 through this area has deteriorated, showing signs of cracking and rutting. This project corrects these deficiencies, and will improve safety by upgrading safety features within the project limits.
The End Result
The end result for this project is a smoother ride and a reduction in the severity of collisions on I-5 between the Todd Road (milepost 26.47) and the weigh station at Kelso (milepost 43.80).
Project Benefits
- Preservation. This project restores the pavement surface condition and increases the life of the roadway.
- Safety. This project will help reduce the severity of collisions and improve safety by upgrading guardrail, median barrier, signing, and removing two median crossovers.
What is the project timeline?
WSDOT is planning to advertise the safety portion of this project in fall 2009 and the paving portion in early 2010. Construction is scheduled to begin spring and summer 2010.
