I-5 - Interstate Bridge to 39th Street - Paving - Complete August 2011

Status

August 2011

  • Construction is complete. Crews wrapped up paving work on August 18.
  • The project was awarded to Granite Construction Company of Vancouver Wash. on May 31, with a winning bid of $2.07 million.

Overview
This project paved and resurfaced 2.35 miles of I-5 through downtown Vancouver. Paving work repaired cracks and potholes on both directions of mainline I-5 and several interchange ramps between the Interstate Bridge and NE 39th Street.

Why is WSDOT paving this portion of the highway?
The asphalt pavement on this section of I-5 deteriorated due to age and normal wear. Winter freeze/thaw cycles accelerated the pavement deterioration, and the road was heavily cracked and rutted. This project was originally scheduled for construction in 2012, but was moved up a year to address the damaged pavement.

This section of I-5 carries more than 100,000 drivers a day, and the pavement needed to be repaired immediately to keep this critical route safe and drivable. Resurfacing the interstate repairs ruts and cracks in the existing pavement and extends the life of the roadway, in addition to providing a smoother and safer ride for motorists. The project also strengthens and preserves the road surface, allowing I-5 to continue handling heavy commuter and freight traffic.

The End Result
A safer, smoother driving surface on both directions of I-5 between the Interstate Bridge (milepost 0.0) and 39th Street (milepost 2.35).

Project Benefits

  • Safety: Motorist safety and drivability is enhanced due to a smoother road surface.
  • Preservation: The new surface extends the life of the roadway, will require less repair work and reduce maintenance costs.

What is the project timeline?

  • April 2011: Project advertised to contractors.
  • July 2011: Construction began.
  • August 2011: Construction completed.
