Overview
The asphalt pavement on this section of I-5 deteriorated due to age and normal wear. Winter freeze/thaw cycles accelerated the pavement deterioration, and the road was heavily cracked and rutted. This project was originally scheduled for construction in 2012, but was moved up a year to address the damaged pavement.
This project paved and resurfaced 2.35 miles of I-5 through downtown Vancouver. Paving work repaired cracks and potholes on both directions of mainline I-5 and several interchange ramps between the Interstate Bridge and NE 39th Street.
 | Improves Safety
This project improves motorist safety and drivability with a smoother road surface.
|
 | Protects Environment
The new surface reduces the effects of aging on the pavement, requires less repair work, and reduces maintenance costs.
|
 | Economic Incentive
This project helped support direct and indirect jobs in local communities, and helped preserve a heavily traveled freight corridor.

Partnerships & Cooperation
At WSDOT we seek to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan. This project did not impact any tribal resources since the work was entirely above ground on existing WSDOT right of way. For more information visit our WSDOT Tribal Liaison website.
WSDOT makes every effort to assess and minimize environmental impacts from our projects. A detailed analysis of the project’s environmental impacts was completed as part of the environmental documentation and environmental permitting processes. For environmental information specific to this project, please contact Barb Aberle at (360) 905-2186, or e-mail AberleB@wsdot.wa.gov.
