I-5 - Blaine Exit Interchange Improvements - Complete September 2010

Overview
The General Service Administration recently completed rebuilding the I-5, Peace Arch Border crossing and making some modifications to I-5. They improved and expanded the U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities. As a result, WSDOT improved the I-5, D Street interchange to match the changes GSA made.

The roundabouts will help improve safety and mobility at the interchange for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists within the city of Blaine.

Partnerships & Cooperation
WSDOT worked with multiple agencies, local officials and the Blaine community before and during construction. Multiple open houses and meetings spanning several years were held before construction began.

Formal consultation with the Nooksack, Lummi, Samish, Sauk-Suiattle, and the Marietta band of the Nooksack tribe was undertaken as a part of this project.

Funding

This project is funded through the following fund sources: 

  • Other funds - $13.2 million Federal funding
  • Total funding available from all sources - $13.2 million
