Overview
We installed three travel time signs at key decision points on Interstate 5. The signs will provide real-time travel information to help drivers decide which route to take to their destinations.
We installed two new travel time signs on northbound I-5 at the South 216th Street overpass near SeaTac and just south of the I-405 interchange in Tukwila. We installed a third sign on southbound I-5 near SR 96 in Mill Creek.
These travel time signs are the latest innovation under WSDOT's Moving Washington program, which uses new tools to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow and manage congestion.

The signs will help improve traffic flow, which will reduce the risk of congestion-related collisions.

 | Relieves Congestion
Giving drivers more information about their commutes will help them choose the best route. Our goal is to actively distribute vehicles on I-5, I-90, I-405 and SR-520 to make the available highway system more efficient.

Partnerships & Cooperation
This project is an important part of the Alaskan Way Viaduct Moving Forward program, which is designed not only to replace the viaduct and seawall but also to manage traffic increases on alternate routes during construction.
We awarded the project to TransTech in December 2008. We began construction in spring 2009 and wrapped up final testing in the fall. All three signs were operations by December 2009.
Funding
This project is funded as part of WSDOT's Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Program:
- 2005 Gas Tax (Partnership Funding) - $200,000
- Pre-existing funds - $600,000
- Total funding from all sources - $800,000
