I-5 - 272nd Interchange Reconstruction

Project Facts
  • I-5 carries about 200,000 vehicles per day near 272nd.
  • Over 38,000 vehicles per day enter or exit I-5 at 272nd.
  • The Star Lake Park-and-Ride, at the northwest corner of the interchange, has 540 spaces.

Project Status

  • This project is in the design phase.

Overview
In this project we will rebuild the I-5 interchange at S. 272nd Street, on the border between Kent and Federal Way. This may involve replacement of the I-5 bridges over S. 272nd Street, realignment of the ramps, transit and/or HOV connections to the I-5 HOV lanes, and improvements to S. 272nd Street.

We are examining the possibility of rebuilding this as a single-point urban interchange (SPUI). In a SPUI, on and off-ramps ramps converge at a single location and are controlled by one set of traffic signals in the center of the interchange.

Why is WSDOT planning to rebuild this interchange?
The S. 272nd Street interchange is one of the key south King County access points to I-5. Tremendous growth has occurred near the interchange, especially in the last 10 to 15 years. This growth causes congestion and forces the need for improvements.

The End Result
The interchange reconstruction will improve access to and from I-5 at S. 272nd Street, improve traffic flow on the freeway and on S. 272nd Street, and improve safety.

Project Benefits
Safety. These improvements will help reduce the risk of collisions.

Congestion relief. These improvements will help traffic flow better and ease congestion.

What is the project timeline?
This project is currently in the design phase. We have not yet set a date to advertise for private contractors to build the project.

Public Involvement
Your thoughts and opinions are important to us. If you have questions or comments, please contact us.

Environmental Protection
We are committed to protecting the environment and will use standard environmental protection measures during construction.
Please visit the WSDOT Environmental Services Web site for more information.

Increasing safety is one of our priorities
There are a considerable number of collisions at this interchange. The interchange reconstruction will reduce the risk of collisions.

Will this project impact tribal resources?
At WSDOT we seek to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.

We have done a preliminary environmental examination of the project and found no tribal resources in the area.
