Crews will reinforce four bridges to meet current earthquake standards.
Project Facts
- WSDOT is working to upgrade all bridges in the Puget Sound area to current seismic standards
- Central Puget Sound has two seismic zones with the highest ground movement in the state
- The 2005 Transportation Partnership Package includes funding for more bridge projects in the region
May 2008
- On March 10, we selected KLB Construction to build this project. We expect to begin work at the end of April.
Using 2005 Transportation Partnership (TPA) funds, we will upgrade four bridges on I-405 in Renton between Sunset Boulevard NE and NE 44th Street to meet current seismic standards and better withstand earthquakes.
Why is WSDOT
upgrading these bridges?
Bringing these bridges to current seismic standards will reduce the chance of failure during an earthquake.
The End Result
Crew will widen cross beams, install girder supports and walls to reinforce the bridges. These upgrades will improve the integrity and performance of the bridges in the event of an earthquake.
Project Benefits
- Safety: Improving the bridges will reduce the risk of catastrophic failure
- Environment: Crews will filter storm water runnoff during construction
What is the project timeline?
Crews will begin improvements in April 2008 and expect to complete the work by September 2008.

Increasing safety is one of our priorities
Improving the strength of the bridges will increase safety on I-405 during an earthquake.
Will this project impact tribal resources?
This project was determined to be exempt from Section 106 Consultation per the Programmatic Agreement between the Washington State Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and the State Historic Preservation Officer signed July 18, 2000.
At WSDOT we seek to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.
