Overview
WSDOT added a ten foot wide recovery area beyond the outside shoulder, to provide a drivable surface for a vehicle to regain control before encountering the steeper slope past the shoulder.
The new interchange was completed 4 months ahead of schedule.
 | Improves Safety
The extended recovery area on the outside shoulder will provide a better surface for drivers to regain control. This will improve safety by decreasing the chance of roll over accidents.

Partnerships & Cooperation
WSDOT worked with tribal officials to identify and minimize adverse impacts to areas of cultural, archeological or anthropological significance. This safety project did not involve any ground-disturbing activities outside the existing roadway; therefore the Section 106 process of the National Historic Preservation Act did not apply.
