Why is WSDOT chip-sealing these highways?
To preserve the roadways and to improve the driving surface, a Bituminous Surface Treatment (BST), also known as a chip seal, will be applied. It is a flexible, protective surface of asphalt emulsion and gravel that is applied to existing or repaired pavement.

The End Result
This project extends pavement life, and improves the ride quality and safety on 158 miles of state highway.

Project Benefits

  • Provides a waterproof layer protecting the undrlying pavement.
  • Increases traction and skid resistance.
  • Fills cracks and raveled surfaces.
  • Provides an anti-glare surface when wet and increases reflectivity at night.

What is the project timeline?
The project will be advetised for bids shortly.  Work will be underway this summer.

Financial Information

  • Pre-Existing Gas Tax - $7-9 million
  • Total Funding from all sources - $7-9 million
