SR 14 - Cape Horn Bridge to Cape Horn Road - Safety Improvements - Complete January 2012

Overview
WSDOT made safety and mobility improvements to the State Route 14 corridor between the Cape Horn Bridge and Cape Horn Road (milepost 25.82 to milepost 26.13) in western Skamania County.

The project straightened curves in the roadway and added turn lanes at the Cape Horn Road and Salmon Falls Road intersections. Crews also constructed two pedestrian tunnel crossings underneath SR 14 near the Cape Horn Slide area (milepost 24.8) and Cape Horn Road (milepost 26.5) as part of the Cape Horn Trail project.

How You Benefit
Cross GlyphImproves Safety
The straighter roadway and new turn lanes will help reduce collisions along this stretch of SR 14. Additionally, the pedestrian tunnels allow pedestrians to access various historic and recreational sites inside the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area without crossing two lanes of traffic.
Car GlyphRelieves Congestion
The new turn lanes improve traffic flow and mobility for all drivers on SR 14. The turn lanes allow drivers to move out of the flow of traffic and turn onto Cape Horn Road and Salmon Falls Road.

Partnerships & Cooperation
Tunnel funding was provided by the Western Federal Lands Highway Division (WFL). WFL serves recreational travel and tourism, protects and enhances natural resources, provides sustained economic development in rural areas, and provides needed transportation access for Native Americans.

WSDOT makes every effort to assess and minimize environmental impacts from our projects. A detailed analysis of the project’s environmental impacts was completed as part of the environmental documentation and environmental permitting processes.
