I-5 - South 317th Street HOV Direct Access - Complete October 2006

Overview
WSDOT and Sound Transit built HOV on and off-ramps in the I-5 median at South 317th Street in Federal Way. We also extended the northbound I-5 HOV lane from its previous end at Military Road to south of South 320th Street, widened southbound I-5 to accommodate an HOV lane, and improved I-5 pavement. Contractor Icon Materials began construction in June 2004. We opened the new ramps to traffic Feb. 10, 2006.

How You Benefit
Cross GlyphImproves Safety
HOVs no longer have to weave across three lanes of I-5 traffic to exit the freeway or reach the HOV lane. Eliminating this weave decreases the potential for collisions.
Car GlyphRelieves Congestion
Reduces likelihood of slowdowns caused by weaving or merging traffic. Encourages transit and carpool use.
Leaf Glyph Protects Environment
Crews built three large water quality treatment ponds to help filter runoff from the freeway.
