Freight is Big

Available estimates allow a rough picture of the scale of freight activity in Washington State.

For 1998:  Freight shipments to, from and within Washington State totaled 466 million tons valued at $353 billion. By tonnage, more than 80 percent was in domestic commerce.  By 2020, the projection is that this volume will grow to 834 million tons valued at $1,167 billion of which, by tonnage, a bit over 75 percent will be in domestic commerce.  Modal splits are shown in the following pie charts:
