Enforcement of Safe Traffic Behavior

Drivers who disobey traffic laws cause or contribute to many to roadway crashes.  Traffic law enforcement
is accomplished by different police departments depending on roadway location and ownership.  For state highways, enforcement is primarily the responsibility of the Washington State Patrol.  WSP has focused its enforcement efforts for the last two years in four major areas:

      • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
      • Seatbelts
      • Aggressive driving
      • Speeding

2002 and 2003

bar graph showing speeding as the bulk of contacts made and citations issued by WSP for 2002 and 2003 - also shows aggressive driving, seat belt use violations and DUI

Increased enforcement emphasis by WSP has not, at least in the years 2002 and 2003, been reflected in
lowered crash rates for either speed-related crashes or impaired driving (DUI) related crashes.
