Crude and petroleum products carried in domestic transportation by the various modes of transportation in 2004 totaled 902.5 billion ton-miles, of which 66.4 percent was carried by pipelines. An additional 27.36 percent was carried by water carriers, 3.81 percent was carried by motor carriers and 2.39 percent was carried by rail.
The total amount of crude and petroleum products increased 19.2 billion ton-miles from 883.3 billion ton-miles in 2003. For comparison, in 1982 total crude & product ton-miles were 1,218.2 billion, representing a twelve-year decline of 315.7 billion ton-miles.

In billions of ton-miles

(1) The amounts carried by pipeline are based on ton-miles of crude and petroleum products for federally regulated pipelines (84 percent) plus an estimated breakdown of crude and petroleum products of the ton-miles for pipelins not federally regulated (16 percent).
(2) The amounts carried by motor carriers are estimated.
