Hot Mix Asphalt - HMA

May be used on all projects. For use when Nonstatistical or Commercial evaluation is used for acceptance of HMA. If used should also use APWA 9-03.8(2) and 9-03.8(7). Requires the use of the following bid items:

Compaction Price Adjustment
Optional use of Standard Specification 5-04.3(10)B "Cyclic Density"
Cyclic Density Price Adjustment

This document is intended to be used in lieu of the 2010 5-04 Hot Mix Asphalt specification.

This specification is not required on federally funded projects, it is an option that has several advantages over the Standard Specification, for example:

1. It allows agencies to accept up to 2500 tons of HMA as with a much lower testing frequency than the Standard Specifications.

2. It provides an economical way to utilize HMA on small projects with minimal RISK and maximum BENEFITS.

3. Provides an alternate method of mix verification that can be performed by competent testing labs that have a gyratory compactor within 24 hours at a lower cost and in less time to the project.

4. The specification includes the process to calculate a Quality Assurance Price Adjustment if either gradation or compaction testing show you are not getting specification material. This will give agencies a method for determining the Nonconforming Mix Factor (NCMF) and sets a maximum composite pay factor at 1.00.
