2009 AASHTO Value Engineering Conference"Oceans of Value"From August 31 through September 2, 2009, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) hosted the 2009 AASHTO Value Engineering Conference at the Westin Gaslamp Hotel in downtown San Diego. The conference was widely attended, including participants from over 16 U.S. states, Canada, Greece, and South Korea. This conference, sponsered by the AASHTO Value Engineering Technical Committee and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is hosted in a different state every two years. CalTrans hosted it for the third time this year, under the direction of Troy Tusup from the Office of Special Projects. 112 participants watched speakers from around the world as they presented 27 regular sessions on a variety of topics related to value engineering. Two panel discussions convened on the final day of the conference, focusing on what the Future is of VE in Transportation and how Cost Risk Assessments are intergrated with Value Engineering. All of the sessions were well attended and well received.
Keynote speakers included; Dwight Horne, FHWA Director of the Office of Program Administration; Randy Iwasaki, Caltrans Director and Richard Land, Caltrans Chief Engineer. The 2009 AASHTO Value Engineering Conference was a unique opportunity to learn more about value engineering, hone value engineering skills, and network with other value engineering professionals. It was an honor for Caltrans to host the conference and a pleasure to be able to show off our state and its transportation system to participants from across the nation and around the world.
Many, Many thanks to those that sponsored this conference!
