North Central Region - News Update

US 2 through Tumwater Canyon reopened to traffic at 8 p.m. Friday evening.  The highway was closed due to a forest fire from Coles Corner at milepost 84 to Leavenworth at milepost 99 since 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

There will still be fire activity close to the highway Saturday and most likely Sunday but crews and their equipment will be outside the travel lanes. Helicopters will continue dipping from the river and can't fly over traffic so they will now dip upsteam from the Green Bridge so they won't be flying over the road and the visual distraction will be minimal.

WSDOT will have a roving Maintenance technician on duty over the weekend to keep rocks and debris off the road. We have electronic sign trailers out on either side of the fire cautioning drivers of fire vehicles and warning not to stop.

Wenatchee maintenance supervisor Rob Sweigard took pictures Wednesday afternoon (when the fire started) and evening.  They're posted on our Flickr site .
