OLYMPIA – People who use northbound Interstate 5 near Pacific Avenue in Olympia can expect long delays over the last two weekends of July due to bridge repair work.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will reduce northbound I-5 to two lanes over both weekends. Crews will create a work zone to rebuild a bridge approach slab and replace expansion joints.

“This work is necessary to keep the highway in good working condition,” said WSDOT Project Engineer Brian Whitehouse. “We appreciate drivers planning ahead so we can make these repairs to fix a recurring maintenance issue.”

Weekend work

WSDOT’s contractor, Tucci & Sons, Inc. will work through each weekend to complete the repair project.

  • 10 p.m. Friday, July 21 until 5 a.m. Monday, July 24
  • 10 p.m. Friday, July 28 until 5 a.m. Monday, July 31

The work requires a concrete curing time to strengthen before traffic can drive on it. Drivers may notice periods of little or no activity in the closed roadway section while this curing process takes place.

Delays expected

To help reduce weekend congestion on northbound I-5 approaching Lacey, WSDOT needs help from drivers.

  • Plan extra time for trips on I-5 in the south sound area.
  • Travel early before 9 a.m. or after 9 p.m.
  • Avoid using northbound I-5 from in town trips in Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater.
