SR 503 Yale Bridge closures begin Sept. 6 for paving work

YALE – The asphalt on the historic Yale Bridge on State Route 503 is beginning to deteriorate, so the 84-year-old structure is getting a 21st-century makeover.

To safely install a new layer of pavement on the bridge, Washington State Department of Transportation contractor Granite Construction, Inc. will schedule bridge closures beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6. During the closures, travelers on SR 503 should add extra time to their trips and follow posted detour routes.

“There’s never a good time to close a single-lane bridge, especially one that serves both Cowlitz and Clark counties,” said Project Engineer Lori Figone. “But restoring the asphalt now will help preserve the wooden bridge deck under the roadway, ensuring we maximize its lifespan.”

Closure details

  • The bridge will close nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Tuesday, Sept. 6, until the morning of Friday, Sept. 9, while crews remove the existing layer of asphalt.

  • The bridge will close nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Monday, Sept. 12, until the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 14, for striping and erosion control.
