GRAHAM – Drivers will encounter a total weekend closure of State Route 161/Meridian Avenue East while crews replace an undersized culvert that carries South Creek under the highway.

The work requires SR 161 to close to all vehicles from just south of 304th Street East/Kapowsin Highway East. The closure is scheduled to last from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, until 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12. A signed detour will direct drivers around the closure.

Crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will replace the existing culvert with a much larger box culvert designed to open habitat for salmon.

At times before and after the total closure, drivers may encounter daytime one-way alternating traffic.

This stretch of highway carries approximately 9,000 vehicles per day.

WSDOT needs help from drivers to keep traffic moving

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead for construction and create a travel strategy:

  • Allow extra time to travel the detour route.
  • Travel early in the morning or later in the evening.
  • Consider postponing or eliminating discretionary trips.

This work is related to WSDOT’s ongoing effort to improve fish passage and reconnect streams.
