2017 project includes paving, safety improvements

WINTHROP – The public is invited to an Aug. 17 open house to learn more about the State Route 20 – Winthrop Vicinity Paving preservation project, scheduled to begin spring 2017.

In addition to paving through downtown Winthrop, this Washington State Department of Transportation project also includes several safety features to make the Riverside Avenue and Bridge Street intersection more accessible to people with disabilities. To comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the work will add colored concrete ramps that complement the town’s wooden boardwalk.

The open house, on Wednesday, Aug. 17, will include details about the project’s design and schedule, as well how the work will affect traffic. Project staff will be on hand to answer questions.

WSDOT has twice met with the Winthrop City Council, city staff, the town’s Westernization Architectural Committee and several business owners for their comments and questions about the project –  first in January and again in April.

“We’re very sensitive to the tourism dependence of the community and plan to start and complete the work as early next spring as weather allows,” said Project Engineer Dan Lewis. “If you can’t attend the open house, send me an email or mail your comments to the address on the project page”.
