    Description:
      Abstract: The State Routes of Washington are segmented according to the nominal roadside landscape classification determined by the Roadside Design Office of the Washington State Department of Transportation.
      Purpose: The purpose of this data set is to provide an easily displayed representation of the classifications of roadside landscape on a medium- to small-scale state-wide map.
      Supplemental Information:
        Roadside Landscape Classification segments are no less than 0.9 miles in length except where State Routes: pass through small towns; pass through semiurban areas directly adjacent to urban areas; or intersect, if a shorter length is necessary to blend the route corridors together.

        Source Contribution: The linear reference system for State Routes in Washington State.
      Process Step:
        Process Description:
          The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Regions and Olympia Service Center located the boundaries of roadside classification segments by milepost for each WSDOT State Route. An Excel spreadsheet listing roadside classification by milepost was converted to a dbf file with Accumulated Route Mileage (ARM). This was used to generate an ArcView event theme based on the Washington State Highways linear reference system. The event theme was converted to a shape file.

Records where the beginning ARM equaled the ending ARM were deleted, as were records which tracked coincident route locations. Records adjoining coincident route locations were edited to reflect the beginning/ending coincident route locations as of 2004.

            The standard distribution compact disc contains all geospatial data sets created by the Washington State Dept. of Transportation. Refer to the included Geodata.txt text file for a brief description of the directory structure. Data formats vary--most data are stored as ESRI shape files, but some data models require coverages. There are also dbf-format tables of data located by geographic coordinates or State Route Accumulated Route Mileage.
