Title: Precipitation Intensity Cells for Washington State, Oregon Climate Service
Geospatial Data Presentation Form: raster digital data

Description:
Abstract:
Maps of extreme precipitation intensities for the state of Washington, created using point values of extreme precipitation, interpolated to a spatial grid using L-Moments calculations and long-term averages produced by the PRISM model. Input stations include NOAA Cooperative, Environment Canada, NRCS SNOTEL, and other stations. Output grids and maps represent estimated 2-hour and 24-hour average precipitation values for the following return periods: 6 months, 2 years, 10 years, 25 years, 50 years, 100 years and 500 years. Data format in ARC-compatible ASCII grids. Included in this collection of data is a data set representing mean annual precipitation.
Purpose: Display and/or analysis requiring precipitation intensity.
Supplemental Information:
There are many methods of interpolating precipitation from monitoring stations to grid points. Some provide estimates of acceptable accuracy in flat terrain, but few have been able to adequately explain the extreme, complex variations in precipitation that occur in mountainous regions. Significant progress in this area has been achieved through the development of PRISM (Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model). PRISM is an analytical model that uses point data and a digital elevation model (DEM) to generate gridded estimates of monthly and annual precipitation (as well as other climatic parameters). PRISM is well suited to regions with mountainous terrain, because it incorporates a conceptual framework that addresses the spatial scale and pattern of orographic precipitation

Process Description:
Data delivered in ASCII text format. Precipitation gridded data files are stored in standard ESRI ASCII Text format with a 6 line header such as:
ncols 702
nrows 215
xllcorner -129.01041666667
yllcorner 44.989652777946
cellsize 0.020833333333
NODATA_value -9.99
Text document was converted to grids in ArcCatalog using the ArcToolbox ASCII to Raster tool.
The raster grids were then given a projection definition of geographic decimal degrees Nad 1983. The raster grids were then reprojected to State Plane South Harn.
