Rail lines of Washington State depicted as linework. Each separately owned mainline route is depicted as a single line. Principle routes are shown with selected sidings and yards. Selected bridges and tunnels are depicted cartographically.
Purpose: This data set shows railroad ownership for geographic information systems at WSDOT. Includes only Surface Transportation Board (STB) decisions after 1996. May not reflect all rail banked lines.

Process Description:
The Microstation-format file "railall.dgn" was converted to measuring units of feet using Intergraph's "wu_setup" command, and the resulting file was converted to Arc/Info coverage format with the Arc command "IGDSARC." The resulting coverage was transformed to geographic coordinates with Arc commands "PROJECTDEFINE" and "PROJECT" and ownership attributes were assigned based on the Intergraph color code found in INFO's "ACODE" table. Uncoded lines were assigned owner values in ArcEdit.

Process Description:
A copy of the 1997 shapefile was made and edited to reflect changes to the state rail system as of January 1, 2007. CGIS contacted the State Rail office for some of the update information. A new field was added to reflect AAR reporting marks. The field for railroad names was filled in for all records. Orthophotos were used to determine more precise location for some rail alignments. The resulting feature class was checked for topology errors.
