What is the need for Pilot Projects?

Development of a statewide transportation GIS layer is a very complex process with a variety of issues, both technical and organizational. Software automation of several processes would save money, time and provide consistency that would support development and maintenance of this layer. The project includes developing prototype software that facilitates the inclusion of data sources into the transportation framework. As applications are developed to meet the subsets of scope they will be tested on data from various jurisdictions in each of the pilot projects. The pilot projects are a method to mitigate risks associated with complex issues and development processes. Pilots will also provide accurate information about needed resources, costs and timelines associated with WA-Trans activities.

Major Components of WA-Trans Architecture:

Translator - Bring data into and out of the system so data providers and users don't have to change their data formats.

Integration Software - Creating "seamless" representations of linear transportation features and making sure all necessary information is there. Integrating LRS is also needed.

Quality Assurance/Quality Control - Providing tools and processes to evaluate data to make sure it is accurate and complete.

Security - Ensure authorized data providers and data users can access and manage WA-Trans data.
