Automated Data Collection & Processing Section
The Automated Data Collection (ADC) & Processing section polls, processes and evaluates traffic data from 165 sites where data is collected continuously. Depending on the type of sensors installed at each site traffic data recorded and collected could include volume, classification, weight and/or speed information. These sites provide a detailed picture of the traffic volumes throughout the entire year, and provide very reliable estimates of Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT). The ADC sites are comprised of: 101 Automated Traffic Recorders (ATR'S) consisting of 8 volume recorders and 93 vehicle length recorders; 21 Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP)/Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) sites; 28 weigh-in-Motion (WIM) sites; and 15 Northwest Region (Seattle Area) Traffic Systems Management Center sites.
ADC sites provide traffic volumes used for estimates of AADT. Most of the sites are also capable of collecting Vehicle length data. Four classes of vehicles are counted that correspond to passenger cars/light trucks, single unit trucks, double unit trucks, and triple unit trucks. Some sites also have the capability of measuring vehicle speed, vehicle weight, and 13-bin ("bins" are vehicle categories using Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) criteria with bin 1 being cars/motorcycles and bin 13 being trucks with seven or more axles and multiple trailers) vehicle classification.
