Abstract:
Lines represent Washington State Highways of Statewide Significance. Highways of Statewide Significance include interstate highways and other principal arterials that are needed to connect major communities in the state. Highways of Statewide Significance were designated by the 1999 Washington State legislature by enactment of SHB 1487, updated by the legislature in 2002 to include an additional portion of State Route 509 and the State Route 2 Newport Couplet, and then updated again to reflect changes by the legislature as of 3/13/2004.
Purpose: This designation assists with the allocation and direction of funding.

Process Description:
The Highways of Statewide Significance (HSS) Excel file was provided by WSDOT's Transportation Planning Office. This data was placed as an event theme on the Washington State Highways, at 24K (increasing) data set and then converted to an ESRI shape file. Ferry routes mentioned in the HSS Excel file were selected from the existing Ferry Routes of Washington State data set and converted to an ESRI shape file. The attribute table for the HSS ferry information was edited to match that of the State Route HSS. The HSS ferry and HSS State Route shape files were merged to create the final data set. In 2/2004 the Accumulated Route Mileage values were recalculated to reflect those used in the 2003 State Routes of Washington Linear Referencing System data set, and the data was re-placed along the 2003 State Routes of Washington Linear Referencing System data set.
