Title: Noise Walls - Proposed, Washington State Department of Transportation
Geospatial Data Presentation Form: vector digital data
Description:
Abstract:
Noise walls are free-standing barriers built parallel to a highway. They are usually found near public areas, such as parks, and residential areas. The walls range in height from 6 to 20 feet, but are normally 12 to 15 feet tall. They can reduce noise levels by 10 to 15 decibels, cutting the loudness of traffic noise in half. Barriers can be formed from earth berms, or constructed of wood, stucco, concrete, masonry, metal, or other materials. This feature class contains Type II noise walls, which are walls proposed for retrofit. This data has been synchronized with the LRS dated December 31, 2009.
Purpose: Spatial data for mapping and analysis purposes.

Lineage:
Process Step:
Process Description:
Noise wall data was compiled in an Excel spreadsheet. The first step in the conversion to GIS data was to add an unique Id field ("ID") to the current and proposed data sets. Separate files were created for noise walls in the increasing and decreasing directions for later use in ArcMap. Two approaches were used to get the data from Excel to ArcMap. The files for the current noise walls were converted to dbfs. The files for the proposed noise walls were converted to Access tables. The dbfs and Access tables were then added to ArcMap. The "Add Route Events" tool was used with the offset option to create event themes from the current and proposed, increasing and decreasing noise walls. The option "generate a field for locating errors" was used; it's found under "Add Route Events" advanced options. The current noise wall event themes were then converted to shapefiles and merged, and the proposed noise wall event themes were converted to feature classes and merged.
