Abstract:
This data set is a linear depiction of railway mainline rights of way currently considered active by the Washington State Department of Transportation's Public Transportation and Rail Office. Included are the active rail lines as well as the abandoned lines. Each separately owned mainline route is depicted as a single line--multiple tracks, sidings, yards, and industrial spurs are not shown. Some of the owners are not listed in this release, but within the year the data will be updated and ownership will be shown.
Purpose: This data set is used to present a small-scale cartographic rendition of railroads in Washington State, and as a reference layer for geographic information systems at WSDOT.

The Microstation design file 500krail.dgn was converted to an Arc/Info coverage with Arc command "IGDSARC." The resulting coverage was transformed to geographic coordinates with Arc commands "PROJECTDEFINE" and "PROJECT." Ownership attributes were assigned using "ARCEDIT."

The standard distribution compact disc contains all geospatial data sets created by the Washington State Dept. of Transportation. Refer to the included Geodata.txt text file for a brief description of the directory structure.
Data formats vary--most data are stored as ESRI shape files, but some data models require coverages. There are also dbf-format tables of data located by geographic coordinates or State Route Accumulated Route Mileage.
