Abstract:
Railroads abandoned since 1953 in Washington state are shown as linear features. These represent abandoned rights of way, whether or not tracks currently exist and whether or not rights of way are currently owned by a railroad operator.
Purpose: This data set is used to depict abandoned railroads at a scale of 1:24,000 or smaller and as a reference layer for geographic information systems at the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Mainline railroads in quadrangles covering incorporated cities or State Routes are shown with high reliability. Minor railroads in remote areas (logging lines, for example) were derived from USGS Digital Line Graphs, and are of questionable quality. Topology was verified with the Arc/Info "BUILD" command.
Completeness Report:
Portions of abandoned railways are missing from these data. These data were created as a mosaic of quadrangle data sets--where a quadrangle contained no State Route and no incorporated place, a quad was not digitized. Thus no potential rail data were collected for such quadrangles.

Process Description:
A Microstation DGN file was converted to an Arc/Info coverage using the Arc command "IGDSARC." Different railroad names and reporting marks were assigned using the IGDS-COLOR item in the conversion ACODE table as a key. Name was added as a field and the full railroad name was entered by hand. The coverage was converted to geographic coordinates using Arc commands "PROJECTDEFINE" and "PROJECT."
