Traffic Control Signs
Traffic Control Signs on Washington state highways help contribute to
the orderly and predictable movement of traffic. Three types of signs,
Regulatory Signs, Motorist Information Signs, and Warning Signs provide
uniformity, guidance and safety for all elements of the traveling public
including vehicular traffic, pedestrian traffic, and bicycle traffic.
Uniform standards for the application of traffic control signs are contained
in a publication of the U.S. Department of Transportation, the
Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The MUTCD has been
adopted as the statewide standard for traffic control devices, through
Chapter 468-95 of the Washington Administrative Code, as mandated by RCW
47.36.030.
The Sign
Fabrication Manual contains fabrication information for most traffic
control signs currently used in Washington state. The manual includes
signs contained in the Federal Standard Highway Signs Book and additional
signs approved for use within the state of Washington.
