Washington State was one of the first states in the country to establish a system of scenic highways. Scenic highways pass through the varied terrain of Washington reflecting the depth of its scenic, cultural and historic landscapes.
State Scenic & Recreational Highways Plan
What are the goals and priorities for the State's scenic highways? How can the state best meet those needs? The answers to questions like these will help the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) as it begins its update of the Scenic and Recreational Highways Plan, an element of the State Highway System Plan.

The National Scenic Byways Program and America's Byways
The National Scenic Byways Program (NSBP) is a grassroots collaborative effort established to help states recognize, preserve and enhance selected scenic routes. From 1992 to 2008, the NSB program has provided funding for almost 2,672 state and nationally designated byway projects in 52 States and territories. Collectively these routes are now known and marketed as America’s Byways.
National Scenic Byways Funding Program accepts applications for funding from Washington State or tribally designated scenic byway or affiliated public or non-profit organizations and tribal governments.
