Washington State Department of Transportation has launched the Safety and Aesthetics program, which is a multi-faceted effort that is considered vital to implementing the fundamental principles of context-sensitive design in  Washington State.  Context-sensitive design considers the elements of mobility, safety, environment, and aesthetics from beginning to end of the project development process.

»       Projects optimize safety of the facility for both the user and the community.

»       Projects are in harmony with the community, and preserve the environmental, scenic, aesthetic, historic, and natural resource values of the area.

»       Projects are designed and built with minimal disruption to the community.

»       Projects involve efficient and effective use of the resources (time, budget, community) of all involved parties.

Since January 2002, the Federal Highways Administration has continuously affirmed their commitment to promoting the use of Context-Sensitive Design with their transportation partners and working with state DOT's to implement wide spread use of CSD into our daily way of doing business.  More information on the direction and other tools from FHWA for integrating Context-Sensitive Design.
