SUBJECT:       Design Policy Memo – LRFD Deck Overhang Design Parameters

The deck overhang shall be designed in accordance with the requirements of the AASHTO-LRFD article A13.4, and the WSDOT Design Memorandum issued on August 17, 2001. The design parameters for common types of traffic barriers used for WSDOT bridges are provided in the attached table.

Deck overhangs supporting types of traffic barriers not shown in the attached table shall be designed in accordance to the requirements of the AASHTO-LRFD article A13.3, A13.4, and the WSDOT Design Memorandum issued on August 17, 2001.

Background:

WSDOT traffic barriers are reinforced per FHWA crash testing requirements. The size of traffic barrier, details of reinforcement, and design parameters are fixed for each type of traffic barrier and shall not be recalculated for each bridge project. The attached table has been developed in order to maintain uniformity in design and detailing. The MathCAD design file is available in J:\Psconcrete\T-Barrier.mcd.
