Motorist Information Sign Program

Motorist Information Signs (MIS) are placed in state highway right of way to alert travelers about the services available at an interchange or intersection. MIS are blue or brown signs (back panels) with individual business logo signs attached.

The back panels are labeled in white letters with the words:

  • GAS
  • FOOD
  • LODGING
  • CAMPING
  • RECREATION
  • TOURIST ACTIVITIES
  • Directional information

Join the MIS Program

Join the MIS Program and help your business benefit from advertising along Washington State Highways. More than 2,000 businesses already participate in the MIS Program. Travelers searching for GAS, FOOD, LODGING, CAMPING, RECREATION or TOURIST ACTIVITIES could see your logo signs.

The MIS Program is a great advertising value. State highways carry thousands to hundreds of thousands of people each and every day. A logo sign on a freeway or expressway with high daily traffic costs about $2.50 a day for 80,000 or more exposures each day. A logo sign on a two-lane highway in a rural area costs $1.00 a day for hundreds of thousands of views every year.

The following chart shows the MIS Program Annual Fees:

Zone
Fee for sign in both directions of travel Fee for signs in one direction of travel
Zone 1: Freeways and expressways with more than 80,000 vehicle per day
$910 $455
Zone 2: Freeways and expressways with less than 80,000 vehicle per day
$683 $342
Zone 3:
Conventional two lane highways
$364 $182

Eligibility criteria for MIS businesses can be found in Washington Administrative 468-70-050. Businesses must meet the eligibility criteria in order to participate in the MIS Program. The eligibility criteria can be found at:
