Making a New Bridge Rail Look Like an Old Bridge Rail

The pictures below show the rail replacement on a bridge on Chuckanut Dr. in the Northwest Region. Chuckanut Drive is SR 11 between Burlington and Bellingham and overlooks Puget Sound. This highway is similar to 101 in that many vacationer's and tourist drive the highway for the scenery. Therefore the highway construction jobs on this section of road try to maintain the existing feeling of the roadway and surrounding.

This bridge is on a curve and had the old style parapet railing and was constructed in the mid 30's

The department designed and is building a new bridge rail to maintain the appearance of the existing railing.

The windows in the formwork are made out of styrafoam.

The only way you can tell the old rail from the new we have constructed is really the concrete looks new.

Dave Crisman's office in Mt. Vernon is administering the contract, the Contractor is Pacific Road and Bridge of Arlington.

Bridge Construction Training for Project Offices

Post Tensioning Class: Describes the field requirements to perform the post tensioning inspection both on bridges and soil nails and permanent ground anchors. The class goes over what post-tensioning is, filling out post tensioning notes, interpreting shop drawings, material requirements, and grouting. The class is for inspectors that haven't been involved in post tensioning inspection for several years and new inspector's. The class should be taken several weeks before post tensioning so the inspector has enough time to prepare for the inspection.

Shaft Inspection Class: Describes what are the field requirements to perform shaft inspection, goes over the current methods of shaft construction, conventional method, rotator, and oscillator method. Specification requirements, testing (CSL testing), obstructions, concrete placement, and miscellaneous details. This class is for new inspectors and inspectors that haven't been involved with shaft construction for several years. The class should be taken prior to the shaft driller arriving on the jobsite to begin work.

For more information on these training opportunities please contact Mark Gaines, Jesse Beaver, Mike Niemi or Mo Sheikhizadeh.
