Washington's Safe Route to Schools Projects

Safe Routes to School

Biking and walking provides important ways for children to get to school and to community sites. In Washington State, all school districts are required to have suggested route plans for every elementary school (WAC 392-151-025)

Washington's Safe Routes to Schools requirements were some of the first in the country, issued in 1975. Since thier full implementation in 1996, most school districts in Washington have provided recommended walking route maps to parents and students. Some schools have also hosted workshops on safe walking and biking for students.
