Description
Located five miles south of Kahlotus, Washington, Lower Monumental is one of our airports on the Snake River we lease from the Corps of Engineers. You may camp on the airport or take the children to see the "real" way our power is made. It is the most primitive of the three on the Snake River, and the dam is quite far from the airport. For dam tours, call 509-282-3219.
The 3,300 foot gravel runway is located part way up the west wall of the canyon. Airport elevation is 813 feet, and density altitude problems are common in the summer. The surface is gravel and in good condition. People and animals have been noted on the runway, and spray operators occasionally use the facilities. The windsock is located midfield on the west side. Terrain rises quickly east and south of the field. There is a powerline 2300 feet north of the airport, and another paralleling the field 500 feet west. We recommend overflight to determine field conditions and check for obstructions. Watch for snakes while walking around. The airport is generally open from June 1st to October 1st.
