Public Transportation Monthly Report for January / February 2009

Sixty-one organizations ask for funding for over 140 projects from the Consolidated Grant program

Organizations were bustling in December to get their projects in for the 2009-2011 Consolidated Grants call for projects. Sixty-one organizations submitted applications for 144 projects requesting over $57 million in funding.

A review team will evaluate these projects and will recommend projects to WSDOT for funding. Based on projects recommended, WSDOT will match the project with the most appropriate funding.

In the spring of 2009, WSDOT will notify each agency of their final ranking status and the type of funding to be awarded. The actual grant awards cannot be made until the federal and state governments approve transportation budgets and the actual appropriation levels are provided to WSDOT.

The WSDOT distributes a variety of state and federal grants to support public transportation programs. The programs covered by the 2009-2011 consolidated application process include:

  • Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Sections 5310, 5311, 5316, and 5317
  • State Rural Mobility Competitive
  • State Paratransit/Special Needs Competitive for non-profit agencies

2009-2011 recommended projects submitted to the Legislature

WSDOT received 42 project proposals requesting more than $120 million to support local government transit mobility projects during the 2009-2011 biennium. A fiscally constrained list of 16 projects and four contingency projects were recommended  and submitted to the Legislature for their consideration. We recognize that several of the projects on the attached recommended projects list are also requesting federal economic recovery funds. We have no way to anticipate which, if any, of these projects will receive federal funding. Once this has been determined and projects are selected for federal funds, there may be some adjustment necessary. The Legislature will make the final determination on project selection and awards. Read more...

Regional Mobility Grant project dedication of Community Transit's Mountlake Terrace Transit Center and Parking Garage

Drawing of the Mountlake Terrace Center and Parking Garage
The Mountlake Terrace Transit Center and Parking garage will give commuters a green way to get to their jobs.
WSDOT’s Regional Mobility Grant program played a key role in the completion of the garage by providing nearly $2 million for this project at a critical time. This project improves the efficiency of our transportation infrastructure and stimulating the economy by providing choices to commuters.

The dedication will be held on Friday, February 20, at 11:00 a.m. It is open to the public. It will be open to commuters on Monday, February 23. The garage and surface parking lot more than double the capacity of the old Mountlake Terrace Park & Ride, which has been closed during construction. Learn more about this Community Transit project.

Regional Mobility Grant Program supports local efforts to improve transit mobility and reduce congestion on our most heavily traveled roadways.

The program has provided $60 million to support local projects since 2006. Examples include:

• New transit services that connect regional population centers
• New park and ride lots and lot expansions
• New buses
• Rush hour transit service on our most congested roadways

New program provides transportation choices for small employers

Bellevue commuter bikes to work from his home.
WSDOT is collaborating with  local governments, transit agencies, and  businesses to support economic development  in growing urban centers. The new Growth  and Transportation Efficiency Center (GTEC)  program, which is part of the Commute Trip  Reduction (CTR) law, works with businesses  to find new ways to encourage employees to  ride the bus, vanpool, carpool, walk, bike, work
from home, and use other commute options  besides driving alone.

Did you know?

Idling a vehicle for a total of 10 minutes a day uses an average of about 22 gallons of gas per year, as well as polluting the air.

Don’t idle your vehicle. If you stop for more than 30 seconds, except in traffic, turn off your engine.

By turning your vehicle's engine off when it isn’t moving, you’ll save money on gas and you and others around you, including children and people with respiratory problems, won't have to breathe unhealthy exhaust fumes. Learn more
