SR 509 Toll Feasibility Study

 Proposed SR 509 extension

In 2009, the Legislature directed WSDOT to conduct a feasibility study regarding tolling for the SR 509 project. Specifically, WSDOT was asked to examine the following:

  • The potential for variable tolling to generate revenue for transportation facilities within the corridor
  • Maximizing the efficient operation of the corridor
  • Economic considerations for future and system investments

WSDOT worked closely with stakeholders from affected cities and jurisdictions, the Port of Seattle, the Puget Sound Regional Council and the Federal Highway Administration to evaluate six different combinations of construction and tolling options.
