Local Agency Traffic Collision Data
Local agency traffic engineers can access electronic traffic collision record data. To analyze the data you need Collision Data Analysis Tool (CDAT) software and have access to electronic
collision records. Then, you can look at and analyze collision data.
Step 1: Download the Collision Data Analysis Tool Software:
Highways and Local Programs supports the Collision Data Analysis Tool (CDAT) software.
Download the Collision Data Analysis Tool software. This activates a 12 megabyte self-extracting zip file called
Collision2005dec8.exe. This file will create a folder on your C: drive called Collision Data 2005 Dec and will extract the software to this folder.
If you have trouble downloading the .exe file, download the zip file called Collision2005dec8.zip. This
requires the application Winzip to extract it. If you still have trouble, contact Charlie Valentine at
ValentC@wsdot.wa.gov or (360) 705-7382.
If you would prefer we send you a copy on CD, contact Charlie Valentine.
Step 2: Import electronic collision record data:
Now that you have loaded the Collision Data Analysis Tool software, you need to download collision data into the program before you can use it to analyze the data.
The Transportation Data Office Collision Data and Analysis Branch supports downloads of collision data. Contact Paul Snow at SnowP@wsdot.wa.gov
or (360) 570-2461 to set up a password-protected account to receive electronic collision record data.
Step 3: Save the electronic collision records:
Place the data received from the Transportation Data Office in the Collision Data 2005 Dec folder, under the Post-2001 Data sub-folder. For questions, contact Charlie Valentine
at ValentC@wsdot.wa.gov or (360) 705-7382.
Step 4: Run the software to access traffic collision data:
Now that you have the software and the data, you can:
- View collision information, including information about drivers, passengers, pedestrians, bicyclists, vehicles, commercial carriers, and property owners.
- Search and organize the information in numerous ways.
- Run a variety of reports.
- Summarize information in bar and pie charts.
- Enter collision reports.
- Correct the location information (road and street names) in collision reports.
For questions on running the software, contact Charlie Valentine at ValentC@wsdot.wa.gov or (360) 705-7382.
For questions interpreting traffic collision reports, contact the Highways and Local Programs Traffic Services Engineer.
